Call for Papers
The Department of Sociology and Social Anthropology, University of Khartoum, in collaboration with the Volkswagen Foundation, invites papers for a workshop titled
Identity, Nationality and Citizenship for Southern Sudanese Communities
University of Khartoum, Sudan 4-5 September 2018
South Sudan’s people have experienced centuries of mass dislocation, forced migration, and wartime flight. Despite six decades of struggle for eventual independence, the current crisis has left millions again fleeing their homes or seeking safety and opportunity elsewhere.
The secession of South Sudan from Sudan in 2011 also left many – particularly those living in Sudan – in legal limbo regarding their nationality and rights; but people have also sought creative legal identifications and alternative paperwork across South Sudan’s many borders. While many of South Sudan’s residents have been subject to generations of violence and predation, to legal and de facto statelessness, they have also developed multiple avenues for practical and paper citizenship and other transnational survival tactics. The workshop aims to explore these ideas and practicalities.
The workshop is part of a Volkswagen Stiftung-funded postdoctoral project, led by Dr. Mohamed A. G. Bakhit (University of Khartoum) with coordination from University of Frankfurt, with Dr. Nicki Kindersley (University of Cardiff).
The workshop invites researchers of all backgrounds and disciplines to discuss forms and uses of citizenship, and ideas of identity and nationality, in the South Sudan context. It aims to bring together scholars, civil society researchers, independent experts and observers from the region and beyond for three days. The workshop aims to develop the papers into a special journal edition.
We invite abstracts for papers related to the above themes, from all disciplines. The deadline for abstracts is 31 January 2018. Full papers are to be submitted by 1 July 2018.
We encourage participants to seek institutional funding, but the workshop has limited financial support, particularly for African scholars. Abstracts and enquiries should be submitted to mohgism@yahoo.com and nickikindersley@gmail.com.
