Dan Newman

Lecturer in Law

Dan writes on access to justice issues, particularly legal aid and the impact of austerity. His work takes a multi-disciplinary socio-legal approach, which draws on influences from feminist scholarship, Marxism and psychoanalysis.

He is currently working on a project called Justice in a Time of Austerity, which looks at the impact of civil legal aid cuts on access to justice. This project is a collaboration with Jon Robins of the Justice Gap and has received funding from Ashurst. His monograph, Legal Aid Lawyers and the Quest for Justice, was published by Hart in 2013 and explored the role that impact of criminal legal aid cuts on access to justice.

Other projects include a British Academy-funded project looking at the experiences of suspects and defendants in the criminal process, as well an edited collection considering the intersection between law and social justice across the globe.
